For crying out loud (is that a saying people still use?) anyway, it is currently 12:08 AM and I have my SAT tomorrow and what am I doing? Thinking about colors and set design. (side note, this is my first SAT, but you should know that I am a night owl and function well at night and need little sleep to function, or at least that is what I keep telling myself.)
So
Tonight I'm thinking in color. (and in production design)
Alright so I have an issue that I need to find a way to overcome and I am honestly not too sure how I will do that. My problem lies in the setting for my film. Based on the way that I have planned it so far there will be two main settings, and I want them to be contrasting. I don't know where I am going to find a setting that I have in mind but I will just need to improvise and figure it out.
Production Design!
- realism
First setting (includes mis-en-scene)
- lighting: low-key
- location: her room
- marble floors
- fancy bathroom
- clean
- mirror
- colors: black / grey
Costume design / Make-up design when she gets out of bed
- hair in bun
- white slippers
- nails done : sparkles
- silk pajamas : pink
- shorts and tank top
- no makeup
Costume design / Make-up design once she is dressed and ready
- violet heels
- diamond jewelry
- straightened hair
- nails done
- tight dress: to demonstrate her emotional restrictions
- heavy makeup
-> violet lips, fake eyelashes, highlighter
Second setting
- lighting: low-key
- location: therapy office building
- colors: blue hues
Explanation of colors:
If the reason behind each choice I made for the colors in all settings and moments is a topic that doesn't interest you then this is the end of my blog today however if you find this interesting then let me enlighten you below :D
While the actress is in her room she is depressed but hasn't realized it, she is a wealthy young girl who embraces her feminity, beauty, and prestige. Therefore the girls in this setting will represent those characteristics. Black will be used representing her prestige and wealth, along with submission to her power that is evil: the force that drives her to be depressed (her job, modeling/acting). Pink will be utilized in the first setting to embrace her feminine side. Violets will also be as prominent as possible because this girl is associated with mystic and beauty, along with wealth and prestige too.
In the second setting the actor is fully aware of her problems / issues, and has brought them to light to get help. Since she is depressed and in therapy for it the colors she will be wearing along with in the surrounding environment will be reflective of her emotional state. Cool hues such as mostly focusing on blues are most present in the second setting. This is because blues are associated with clear thinking, which the actress is trying to obtain through therapy and deep reflection (demonstrated in the voice over). Lighter blues more specifically will be in this scene because it symbolizes depression which the actress suffers from and it represents sadness and negativity.
