Representation!

Hi again!

A group, issue, or event, that I want to represent in my project up in the future is gender roles and gender stereotypes. I plan to represent girls and boys as equal and is important to me to limit the inequalities between them both.

Incredibles, directed by Brad Bird is an example of a movie that men and women are shown as equal and both do the same roles while also taking on what they can, biologically. The men and the women both have main character roles and everyone is a super hero. In my media project I plan to give women roles that used to be for only men, and vice versa. The representation will be broad, and all encompassing. 

Another example is 13 going on 30, directed by Gary Winick, the main character is a powerful business women who is in charge of a section of the magazine. On top of her professional life, she also takes a hold of her fate and goes after the man that she wants, she doesn’t wait to be pursed she pursued. This is a very inspiring female role that is vernally new to the media and I plan on representing women this way in my project because it is empowering. 

I feel as though the representations characteristics of men versus women are based on the exaggerated reality of the real differences that exist between the two different groups. The source for the representation characteristics is fair and correct but the way that men and women specifically in the past have been represented in the media has been extremely unfair and wrong. That is what I plan to challenge in my project. 

I plan to not completely ignore the fact that men and women are both different, and that they do have differences. Girls should have the opportunity to do what guys can do because our minds are equal but there will always be a clear biological difference.

I'm back!

Recently I have spent time considering other genres and I have come across horror films. Personally I don’t like being scared but there is something so thrilling about watching a horror film, especially in theaters. So, having said all that, I am ready and excited to share all my new insight with you!! 

In the simplest terms, horror films are designed to make the audience frightened and cause them to panic while feeling dread and provoke us to scream! Speaking of audience, it's usually teens and young adults who feel drawn to horror films because this group of people is more entertained by this fake reality and are driven by adrenaline. These films are usually filled will all sorts of different things depending on the type of horror, for example creepy monsters to scary looking people. 

Directors of horror films use specific production techniques that set them apart from different genres. Low key lighting is utilized to create a greater sense of suspense and confusion across the audience. Another production technique that creators of horror films use is a remote filming location, usually, so the actors in the film are perceived to be alone and vulnerable. Sound wise, eerie music leading up to sharp stings in the films are used to create a build up and put the audience on edge. The effects of these production techniques are aiming to captive the audience so they are more likely to get shocked and terrified. 

A recent, popular example of a horror film remake that was based of the original, produced in 1990 is called It, directed by Andres Muschietti. It embodies what a horror film is very adequately. It is a story about seven young children in Derry, Maine who go through the obstacles that a shape shifting evil who comes and taunts them through the sewers every 27 years puts them through. Over the course of the summer, the band of outcasts must overcome their personal fears to fend of this clown. Throughout the film, it often is dark and stormy, this low-key lighting plays into what horror films typically encompass. It made me and my friends on the edge and frightened during the whole movie which is why it fully embodies the horror genre.

There was a horror film released in 2015 called The Visit directed by M. Night Shyamalan that was about two siblings who discovery a shocking secret while visiting their grandparents for the first time in the deep farm county in Pennsylvania. This film is a great example of a horror film because it encompasses many of the production techniques of horror films while creating the same effects as well. For example, the setting is on an extremely isolated farm so that the kids are trapped and the audience feels even more stressed out for them since they can't get out. Additionally, most of the scary scenes in this production occur at night with low-key lighting. The plot is stressful, and it is scary, no viewer of it would like to find themselves in this scenario, this film accurately portrays what a horror film is.
