On My Own

So.

I have news that comes with some good and some bad.

I am working all alone for this portfolio project!!!!

Scary, I know. But I think that the benefits outweigh the risk in this case. I know that I will be better off being allowed to have all of the creative freedom. I work well in groups but only when everyone is ready, willing, and able to help out, you know?

Anyway, this means that I get to make every decision all alone totally based on what I want, this gives me sooooo much freedom which, granted, is amazing however it is so much pressure and I cannot stop pondering this project. I have so many different ideas all in my head which, side note, I cannot wait to start filming and producing because I am so excited.

Let me share with you some ideas.

I want there to only be one main actor and little to no dialogue. My plan is for this movie to be about a teenage girl who is rich and famous, although I am a little limited because I don't have limos and fancy things like that I think that it will be a fun hurdle to get over and I think I can enjoy attempting to create a set and a film opening that feeds into my vision for this project. I plan on having castings for the main actress this weekend- I want her to be a girl, but if no one fits exactly what I'm looking for then I will do it myself.

There are pros and cons to acting in it myself. The pros are that for the most part I won't need to disturb anyone when I am trying to film this is good when I am editing and realize I want more footage. Cons however are that I need to really direct whoever I get to film and they need to do exactly what I want in terms of shots and camera movements because it all has so much meaning in the overall development of my film opening. I will weigh those both and consider it while I am finding someone to be in it.

Tight shots, use of lighting- either very dark or very bright, and a controlled setting- my room, are some of the ways that I have brainstormed thus far to overcome the obstacle that I have of not being able to show the life of someone who is rich and famous in my home and everyday surroundings.

I am going to find some examples of what I am picturing so you can better understand my vision, keep an eye open for my next post!

What they want

No matter what I inevitably chose to do with this project which is ever so coming up uncontrollably, there are certain basic conditions that I need to follow and things that I should do. Based on Data From a Century of Cinema movies have evolved and there are things that people enjoy watching now that in the past maybe wouldn’t have been as good. Heres a list of some of the new findings.

-shorter cuts (Did you guys know that the average length of shots in 1930 was 12 seconds whereas now it is only 2.5 seconds? This could because the attention span of people declines every year.)

-different patterns of shots (this is used for two reasons 2) the technology that has been created every year allows this to be easier and 1) it keeps the natural conditions of human nature to have a small attention span at bay.)

-more motion (this method along with all the others maintains viewers attention as well. it is important however to walk the fine line between annoying your audience and intriguing them, known as the “triangle of tolerability”)

-changing light (movies are getting darker as time goes on, and this along with colors can be utilized to draw visual interest to the films)

With all of this new-found information going forward, regardless of what I chose to create I will embrace these components that have been proven to be of interest to the audience of today.

This or That?

To be totally honest my mind is in a million different places with this project right now. I mean its not a bad thing because it is resulting in me researching and pondering a lot about this and I am excited for what’s to come. But I can’t decide what I want to create, there are so many factors that need to be picked and so many choices that need to be meticulously considered.

Lets get one thing super clear, I want to get across something new and nothing tired, not anything that has already been seen a million times on the big screen. It can’t be something that within the first 2 minutes they already know whats going to happen at the end and are bored, I want them to be on edge the whole time.

I find myself compelled to compose a piece that makes my viewers wish that they could see the whole film because they are so fascinated to figure out what happens next. I want to them hooked from the very beginning.

Luckily I am no stranger to successfully pursuing the ‘net to enlighten myself and to make decisions based on not only what interests me but what has proven to be successful for others! So, I have found a super helpful source which has given me some great ideas for how to complete my piece.

Below I have compiled the list that I found from an interesting article which I read and drew ideas from regarding the possible ways to open my film and below are the ones which i am the most interested in doing:

-Dramatic Irony: gives the viewers vital knowledge and insight that the main character is seemingly unaware of.

-Flash forward: when there is a narrator who tells the main story that already happened and there are flash forward parts so the narrator continues the story.

-Montage: a compiling of short clips to give the viewers a large amount of information at once. It tells a high sped story and then can transition in to a regular pace.

I do see myself going about my film opening through one of these methods and I am pretty excited because they all sound equally as fun to me.

Miss me?

Good evening my beautiful people!

A lot has progressed since the last time I've talked to you guys! Let me catch you up, so, I've been promoting a band with my group: Hailey Goff and Josh Keller. Together we worked to created the name "In Debt" for our band while we creatively produced marketing and distribution ideas to our target audience: middle class boys and girls around the ages of 15-30. To do this we came up with some pretty cool ideas such as producing a music video, all contributing ultimately to our main concept of having a relatable band in which each song in their album has a different scenario or ideas that our target audience can really relate to.

I have to say that it was quite difficult to create an entire brand from the ground up. However the research and universal music group gave us very helpful information that was essential to making the right choices for our band. The two bands we extensive investigated were Imagine Dragons and Pearl Jam, both with the same genre as our band In Debt. We discovered that a website would be very beneficial for us, while including links to our social media, tour dates, merchandise, contacts, our music video, etc. This informed our research choices as we also saw some things that they were willing to do for their target audience. For example, Pearl Jams fixed their music video to go into a target commercial and we made our music video very appealing to our TA. Through our research we uncovered that having a profound and well done website and social media presence is vital to the overall success of our band.

A really fun part of our campaign was that cultivation of new and engaging marketing creations! We did our best to market to our target audience the best way we knew how. Using social media platforms such as Instagram and twitter were smart for our target audience based on the demographics we found and that a large amount of our target audience is on these apps. We decided not to make a Facebook page based on the numbers we found of our TA on that app. Our plan is to use all of these apps differently so people won’t be annoyed with the same information on all of them. In addition, we made merchandise that is simple, being black with white print so our TA would wear it out and enjoy wearing it while we got free advertisements. We also created merchandise that our TA would be likely to purchase and use: pop socket, swell bottle, hoodie, etc. Check out our website https://lina3711.wixsite.com/indebtofficialband. Forever in debt!

Here are some examples of my creations:

First, our Instagram and Twitter pages:

Next I have a screenshot of the youtube channel that we created:

And lastly, an example of the merchandise that we created:

It was so intriguing and refreshing to learn all of the things that I did throughout this process. Throughout the music video I learned many things that will assist me during my portfolio project. For example, I learned that much more planning is required before going to film and shoot, plus more filming may be required once the editing process takes place, so leave lots of time to do this. This plays into time management which is a skill that I need to master especially going into the portfolio project. This project really brought to my attention  just how I will complete my portfolio project and that I would like to do it with as much time as I can put into it and not procrastinate to that I produce the best possible work that I can because in this project I was restricted to a few days before the deadline and had to film in the rain. This inhibited my creative process and I would like to avoid this going forward if possible.

Lina
